The Upstate “Swings”

Every Tuesday night at The Handlebar in Greenville you will see a colorful mixture of zoot suits and fancy footwork. The concert hall floor is cleared to make room for at least 100 dancers from all skill levels and backgrounds. Thanks to Paul and Ansley Hoke, organizers of the weekly event, and keepers of the SwingReview.com web site, dance lovers in the Upstate can participate as dancers or spectators. Paul Hoke, a dance instructor, teaches the fine art of Jitterbug, Lindy Hop, Carolina Shag, Balboa, Charleston, The Big Apple, and East & West Coast Swing. His instruction and event promotion have created a dance “buzz” around the Upstate. People are drawn to the social interaction, and dressing for the occasion is also part of the fun.
