Clemson Most Affordable College Town in Atlantic Coast Conference
Clemson was found to be the most affordable
college town in the Atlantic Coast Conference in a national study released by
Coldwell Banker®. The Coldwell Banker College Market Home Price Comparison Index
(HPCI) examines markets that are home to 119 Football Bowl Subdivision (I-A)
schools, ranking more than 300 markets across the United States and Puerto Rico
in affordability.
Clemson home prices in 2007 averaged $219,600. Winston-Salem, N.C., home of Wake
Forest University, and Durham, N.C., home of Duke University, were ranked second
and third in the Conference with home prices averaging $228,900 and $229,900
respectively.
“College towns like Clemson remain a popular living destination – whether for
first-time homeowners or alumni looking for great retirement spots,” says Brad
Halter, President and General Manager of Coldwell Banker Caine. “School spirit
draws many alumni back to Clemson and for others, continuing education, pursuing
jobs, enjoying culture, and following college sports makes Clemson ideal.”
Halter says that many parents have become interested in buying homes for their
college-aged sons and daughters.
“Once a child is able to live off-campus, many parents consider buying
off-campus housing to allow their child to live in a family owned home with
classmates paying rent as roommates,” Halter says. “Over time, the home
appreciates in value, and the family can keep it or sell it with the proceeds
going toward college payments.”
“Typically, game-day investors and families look at buying in the Clemson area
as a two-fold advantage – there’s the benefit of investing in the property, but
also there’s the added benefit of securing parking for game days.”
